Something slightly different this week.
β
A trip down memory lane on the origin story of how BudgetBuddie was born.
β
Back in late 2021, my fiance and I were coming to the stage in life where we had a lot of big life events coming up (wedding, travel, mortgage, etc).
As most of us do, we set out a budget using Excel. We listed out our main expenses per month and compiled each total against each expense. We plugged in our income, and at the end of it was what we had left over.
β
After setting our budget, we went away feeling confident that we were making progress and could comfortably enjoy what was coming up without breaking the bank.
β
After a month passed, we sat down again and worked through our finances. To our surprise, we blew the budget big time! Which left us scratching our heads.
β
We thought there had to be a better way to keep track of how much we were spending.
β
So we decided to create our own sheet that linked to our accounts so we could see our transactions in real time.
β
After many late nights of building our own Google Sheet, it was finally finished. It is linked to our bank, Kiwisaver, and shares accounts to give us that one source of truth.
The sheet was nothing special; it wasnβt pretty, but it did the job.
β
β
This whole process gave me a thought: who else has this problem? Or how many people want more clarity on their finances but lack the tools to do so? So I set out to talk to as many people as possible to see if this problem was real.
β
After talking with and surveying hundreds of people, the results showed that over 75% of people actually only used their mobile banking app to manage their money. Seeing your account balances and transactions was the only way most of us could navigate through our financial lives.
β
There had to be a better way.
β
Then along came the idea for BudgetBuddie. I designed a full web version, improved the functionality of the designs, and added many more features.
β
β
BudgetBuddie was built to improve how Kiwis manage their finances by bringing them from earners and spenders to savers and investors.
β
So why not come and join us? π
